Sedgemoor District Council is pleased announce it has issued its first fixed penalty notice to a resident of Bridgwater for failing to remove their dogs faeces from Blake Gardens. The £50 on the spot notice, was paid within the first 14 days, after being issued last week.

Sedgemoor District Council has a zero tolerance of Dog Fouling and any persons caught failing to remove their dog faeces from a public place will be challenged, resulting in a fine or prosecution.

Fiona Dickson Dog Warden/Animal Welfare Officer said ‘ We are working hard  in the Environmental Protection unit to ensure our public spaces are free of dog fouling and this is one of the measures we are now using to ensure that all of the community can enjoy using our parks and open spaces’.

Sedgemoor District Council and Dogs Trust are urging dog owners to pick up the poop and help clean up our public spaces for a great summer outdoors.

While the majority of owners are responsible and pick up after their dog, a careless few are still giving dogs a bad name, and each year thousands of complaints are received by local authorities about dog mess.

Littering our parks, pavements and public spaces, dog poop is a problem which Sedgemoor District Council is determined to tackle.

Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, and Sedgemoor District Council are urging all dog owners to be responsible and ‘Bag it and Bin it’ during National Poop Scoop Week, which runs 26th July – 1st August.  Cleaning up after your dog is simple and the only way of ensuring a summer free from the nuisance of pooch poop.

BAG IT AND BIN IT is a simple plan to follow....

BAG IT – Once the dog’s poop has been scooped, carefully turn the plastic bag inside out and your dogs mess will then be ‘bagged’.

BIN IT – Dispose of your bag in a ‘Poop ‘ bin. Contrary to popular belief, dog waste can also be put into a public litter bin if a specific dog waste bin is not provided.

Clarissa Baldwin, Chief Executive, Dogs Trust, said: “We want Poop Scoop Week to be about saying thank you and well done to the millions of well-behaved dog owners, but also to remind the irresponsible minority that your dog can’t pick up after himself. If every dog owner fulfils their duty, we can all look forward to summer strolls and picnics in parks, free from the worry of dog poo. Let’s make Poop Scoop Week the week everybody takes responsibility – we will be amazed at the difference we can make.”

Failing to pick up after your dog in the Sedgemoor District can result in a fine of up to £2000 or Court action.

Sedgemoor District Council has today launched a unique partnership with Sedgemoor Citizens Advice Bureau, Sedgemoor Credit Union and Wessex Home Improvement Trust to help households who, through no fault of their own are at risk of losing their home.

A Government grant of £38,000 will be used to help keep households in their own homes by providing them with a small, interest free loan. As part of the scheme, householders will be required to register with the Credit Union, agree to save an agreed amount each month and to make affordable repayments against the loan after a full financial assessment by the Citizens Advice Bureau.

In return, an agreement will be made with the lender to clear some of the outstanding debt to enable the householder to remain in the home.

Home owners will be referred to Wessex Home Improvement Trust and the Credit Union will administer funds for those in rented accommodation.

Jerry Milton, Housing Advice Manager for Sedgemoor District Council said ‘Although loans are relatively small, the Repossession Prevention Loan Scheme is part of a range of measures designed to assist those at risk of homelessness. Last year the Council was able to prevent over 300 households from becoming homeless and we hope to continue this good work’.

Anyone who is concerned about their housing situation or for more information on this scheme should contact the Council’s Housing Advice Team on 0845 408 2547.

Check It Out! - Scam Phone Calls

Sedgemoor District Council is warning people to check that phone calls are from Sedgemoor.  The Council has had three calls recently from worried residents, who have received phone calls from people purporting to be working with Sedgemoor District Council.  The tricksters tell customers that they are due a reduction in their Council Tax Band and asking them for their bank details for a refund to be made.

If a customer has recently received a phone call and been asked for their bank details they should phone the Council to check the validity.

If, at any time, a customer has any doubt about the identity of a person telephoning and claiming to work for Sedgemoor they should request a name and extension number and ring 0845 4082540 (Sedgemoor Direct) to confirm the caller’s identity.
