2010 Flower Show
The annual Puriton Flower Show took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 14th August. Despite the difficult growing conditions this year, there were 413 entries, which made a very colourful display.
Even though the weather turned wet, the car booters on the field braved the storms, while inside the hall, a wonderful atmosphere was created by the Burnham & Highbridge Band. The Chameleon Batonettes kept the children entertained with face painting and games.
The trophies were presented by our vicar, the Rev. Doris Goddard, and her husband Mr Jim Goddard. Notable among the winners were Mr Brian MacDonald, who won the Puriton Inn Cup for highest points in sections 1 - 5 plus three other trophies, and Mr Bryan Hallett who took the Denis Chilcott Cup for runner up in sections 1 - 5 plus three other pieces of silverware.
Mrs Mollie Gooding and Mrs Anne Mason were joint winners of the Society Cup for highest points in section 4 (domestic) and Mrs Jessica Cather took the John Lee Cup for her imaginatively decorated ‘spider’s web’ chocolate cake. The Dommett Cup for the highest points in section 5 (handicrafts) was awarded to Ms Jeanne Bradban, whose all-round talents include crochet, knitting, and jewellery-making. The Lynfa Gooding award for the best craft item or drawing in the show went to young Aaron Spuffard for his beautiful photograph of a swan.
In the junior section, Joshua Roberts took the McNally Cup for highest points in group A (up to age 7); the Miller Cup for highest points in group B (8-11) went to Evie Stanley and the Meredith Cup for highest points in group C (12-15) was won by Susie Whitcombe. Susie also took the Young Person’s Award for the highest points in all three groups.
Finally, thanks all round to Puriton WI for providing the delicious refreshments, the judges for giving up their time (Mr Richards - Vegetables & Fruit, Mr Fisher - Flowers, Mrs Moreton - Floral Art, Mrs Hobbs – Domestic, Mrs Spicer - Handicraft and Mrs Rickard and Mrs Smith – Art) and the Flower Show Society for giving everyone such an enjoyable afternoon.
